architectural
Some kitchens go beyond style and function into the realms of architecture. They are built within the constraints and parameters of existing structures or designed to extend or complement them. I thought it would be interesting to look at what some of the masters of spatial design have created and how they use the different elements within a space, such as their exacting choice of materials and their consideration of light and movement, to see what we ordinary folk can glean from their skill and expertise.
Most of the kitchens featured here have been designed by architects, either for their personal use or for their clients. However, Antoine Vandewoude’s Antwerp kitchen has been fashioned by a supreme craftsman and artist who sets the same exacting standards of design, precision and forethought. The Italian green box kitchen is a unique and imaginative glass structure, added to an architecturally unprepossessing holiday home. A surrounding framework of lightweight posts and wires clad with climbing plants and creeping foliage has created what is in effect a truly ‘green’ building.
The kitchen at Astley Castle blends the old with the new. The contemporary home that was built into the fabric of the ancient ruins won the 2013 Stirling Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious architectural competitions. Elegant and spatially grand, this luminous open space successfully combines twenty-first century technology with traditional materials and mediaeval walls. It’s an architectural gem – a bold and original scheme that’s created a truly beautiful, functional and romantic space where you feel you’re a part of the aesthetic.
In a converted factory apartment in central London, two talented architects transformed their industrial-style kitchen into a sleek, sophisticated space, employing an unusual mix and match approach with bespoke units and nuanced details that proclaim craftsmanship and impeccable style. Some of these builds, such as the Silver Strand Californian beach house, are jaw-dropping, but although they’re the stuff of dreams for most of us there’s often something appealing that we can apply and enjoy in our more modest circumstances.
